PREFECT SELECTION PROCESS
The school
has a Prefect Selection System that has been in place for many years. It must be
remembered that we are looking at “leadership qualities” within the individual.
We certainly do not consider marks, parent involvement, race, gender or
religion as criteria. We endeavour to be fair to all
individuals in our school. We see leaders as individuals who are able to manage
situations, groups, and take a lead in performing tasks. They also possess a
keen sense of duty, are mature in outlook and display self-discipline in their
own approach to life. Over the years we have seen a similar pattern of results
and feel our system is fair to all.
Over the
years any child is at our school, we build up a record of the achievements and
abilities of each individual. Teachers also have to observe the pupils as part
of the continual assessment in their learning areas/subjects. Even when group
work is undertaken, it allows a teacher to observe leadership qualities within
each individual. The various tours that are undertaken by the school also allow
for leadership qualities within pupils to come to the fore as pupils are given
tasks to complete in different and unique surroundings. Pupils in each group
will also eventually formulate ideas of who should be in charge of their group.
When we
approach Prefect Selection, we adopt a participatory approach. All Grade 7
Pupils are involved in voting, the Teachers vote and we even take input from
outside Tour People who have worked with the pupils. We tally up these votes
and end up with a shortlist of potential candidates. We do have a cut off point
that has been at a fairly constant score point each year. Pupils who are at the
top of the voting scale are then made prefects.
We are also
aware that some pupils may be late developers. Should a pupil really come to
the fore during the remainder of the year, the Principal will have no qualms,
acting on valid confirmation, in making that person a prefect too.

The
Prefects for 2012 were announced at Assembly on 2nd March 2012. Parents of
these pupils were also invited to attend and see some important history in the
lives of their children being made.
The
Prefects for 2012 are: Chiara Blows, Matthew de Bie,
Michelle de Meillon, Tiago dos Santos, Karen Hsu,
Kirsten Jones, Ryan Mildenhall, Ryan Naamdhew, Rhia Pillay, Daniel Skirrow, Carmen Teixeira, Andrea Trentini, Kyle Ward.

LEADERSHIP
TRAINING
Mrs van Zyl
kindly organised a Leadership Afternoon so the Prefects could bond together and
get to know each other better. Some pupils didn't realise
that they would do some strange things all in the name of teamwork and
leadership!

The Head Boy needs some
energy!

So do we!

Lively lunchtime!

Best Boerwors Rolls ever!

And what part of a car are
you?

Wanna hear something?

All hands on deck!

This is "knot"
easy!

Help me guys - I'm nearly
there!

How are we
doing?

Is it a
bird? Is it a plane?

Here we go!

Perfect
Landing!
